Use Dicamba (Banvel) herbicide at a rate of eight ounces per acre on bindweed spots at least 15 days prior to planting, or use 16 ounces at least 30 days prior to planting of milo. Allow two weeks before tillage to allow time for herbicide to work.
Persistence over the course of many years is the only thing that can kill an established bindweed plant.
Apply eight ounces Dicamba (Banvel) after all milo is in or past the one-leaf stage but before the milo is 15 inches tall. Use drop nozzles if the milo is more than eight inches tall to keep the herbicide out of the milo plant whorl. Use of 2,4-D Amine on growing milo will increase the chance of brace root damage and leaning of the milo plant.
Note: The Dicamba rates in growing milo will only offer suppression of bindweed and will not eradicate bindweed on the acres. Late fall treatment of bindweed in row crop areas after harvest is a good way to get better control of the bindweed on your row crop acres. Contact the Noxious Weed Director for recommendations.
